The Meaning of Nursing to Me

Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to either work in the medical field or be a teacher. I later learned that I could do both by becoming a nurse. When I think of nursing, I see someone who is a patient advocate and the foundation of the medical field. Maya Angelou stated, "As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul and body of our patients, their families and ourselves. They forget your name but they will never forget how you made them feel". Nursing gives me the opportunity to help others physically, mentally and emotionally with my medical knowledge and education. It is great to have a national recognition but the only thing I need to satisfy me is to know that I did everything in my power to help a patient and their family for the better by upholding to the pledge I stated when becoming a nurse.

With a Master's degree in Health Care Systems Management, I plan to gain more knowledge about the leadership strategies in various roles of the nursing administration field. My ultimate goal is to use this degree to open up my own facility that helps mothers or soon-to-be mothers who are 16-25 years old with self health, finances, parenting education and obtaining a high school diploma/GED or college diploma. In addition, my facility will help with the adoption process by providing counseling sessions, educating the mother on the various types of adoptions and finding the right set of parents for their child. With the leadership and management skills that I will learn from obtaining this degree, I will be able to fulfill my goal and continue to elevate the standards of my profession.
